The Rise of Justin Timberlake
Today we’ll dive into the life of the youngest member of NSYNC. He was a part of one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, and also one of the best performing male solo artists in history. Today’s topic is “The Rise of Justin Timberlake”.
Justin Randall Timberlake was born in Memphis, Tennessee on January 31st, 1981. His father was a choir director at a Baptist church, and most of his family members were involved in music. At 11 years old, Justin performed on Star Search and sang a country song. He started to gravitate towards R&B music and listened to artists such as Al Green, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. In 1993 and 1994, he was on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, where he met JC Chasez, and ended up recruiting him to be a part of a new boy band, which turned out to be NSYNC.
NSYNC was formed in 1995 and Justin and JC were the two lead singers. Their first album sold 11 million copies, and their second album No Strings Attached, sold 2.4 million copies worldwide. Some hit singles were “It’s Gonna Be Me” and “Tearin’ Up My Heart”. In late 1999, Justin appeared in a Disney Channel original movie Model Behavior, and this was when he started to receive more attention from the others in the group. In 2001, the group released a couple more albums, and they were internationally famous by this time. Everyone knew who NSYNC was. They performed at the Academy Awards, the Olympics and even the Super Bowl. NSYNC became the fifth-best selling boy band in history selling more than 70 million records worldwide. By the time 2002 came, the band started to split and work on their own solo careers. Justin partnered with Pharrell Williams and then started to create new music.
In 2002, Justin performed at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. His first single “Like I Love You” ended up peaking at number 11 on the charts and shortly after this performance his debut album Justified was released. It ended up selling ten million copies worldwide. The album produced singles “Cry Me A River” and “Rock Your Body”. Justin went on tour with Christina Aguilera in the summer of 2003.
After his rise to stardom, in 2004, he performed at the 2004 Super Bowl game with Janet Jackson. Many people will always remember this performance because Justin mistakenly tore off a piece of Janet’s bra. This is a moment in music history that will always be remembered. He won two Grammy awards, but he could only receive them if he agreed to apologize on TV for the Superbowl incident, which he did.
After the incident, Justin starred in several films while putting his music career on hold for a brief moment. During this time he still did collaborations with different artists like the Blackeyed Peas and Snoop Dogg.
In 2006, he released his second solo album FutureSex/LoveSounds, and this album became the biggest album for pre-orders on iTunes. Some popular singles were “SexyBack”, “My Love” and “What Goes Around...Comes Around”. His music became a priority due to all the success, so he decided to fall back on his acting career for now. This album was added into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s music library.
Justin made some appearances and hosted the European MTV Awards, and Saturday Night Live, and his hosting turned out to be one of the most iconic musical moments on the show in history.
In 2008, Justin collabed with Madonna on her hit single “4 Minutes” and it became an international hit. He collabed with other artists such as 50 cent, Lil Wayne, Nelly Furtado, and Duran Duran. He won two Grammys this year for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Dance Recording.
The following year of 2009, he collabed with more popular artists such as T.I, Ciara, and he co-wrote and produced for Leona Lewis’s second album. He also helped with Rhianna’s Good Girl Gone Bad album as well.
So in 2010, Justin went back into acting and played a role in The Social Network, and in 2011 he starred in Bad Teacher, and Friends with Benefits.
Justin released his third album in 2012 titled The 20/20 Experience. The album debuted at number three on the charts, and after not performing for four years, Justin made his second performance at the 2013 Super Bowl Halftime Show. Some popular singles were “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay-Z, and “Mirrors”. It became the best-selling album of the country in 2013. He went on tour with Jay-Z, and he also appeared on Jay-Z’s album Holy Grail”.
The second part of the 20/20 Experience album was released later in 2013 and debuted at number one on the charts. He won three Grammy Awards this year and also appeared on Michael Jackson’s second posthumous record Xscape.
Moving on to 2016, Justin voiced in the animation film Trolls and he was the executive music producer for the film as well. The single “Can’t Stop the Feeling” debuted at number one of the charts and became the best-selling song of the year with 2.4 million downloads.
He released his fifth album in 2018 titled Man of the Woods. He debuted some singles in his Super Bowl Halftime performance, and the album went gold and was the sixth best-selling album of the year.
In 2019, Justin received his Doctorate degree from Berklee College of Music. He announced the Trolls World Tour, and released singles featuring SZA, and Anderson. Paak.
Justin Timberlake had a tremendous music career and is the 4th best-paid music personality at the time. With all his accolades, Justin is a R&B and Pop legend and a top artist of the 2010’s. Even before his solo career, he was rocking the music industry with his talent.
