8 Things We Didn't Know About Aaliyah
Everyone knows Aaliyah was a standout artist and was made to star in the limelight. She was an actress, and a model who created new trends that every little girl wanted to follow. Her music career kicked off right after performing on the show Star Search at only 10 years old. We all know who Aaliyah was, but there’s more to her life that not everyone was aware of. Today’s topic is “8 Things We Didn’t Know About Aaliyah”.
1: Won more than 30 awards
Although Aaliyah’s career was short lived, she won more than 30 awards. Some of the awards include Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist at the 2002 American Music Awards, Best Actress for ‘Queen of the Damned’ at the 2002 BET Awards and Top Hip-Hop/R&B Artist of the Year at the 2000 Billboard Music Awards. Also, Aaliyah was the youngest singer to perform at the Oscars. In 1998, she was only 19 years old and performed “Journey to the Past” from the film Anastasia.
2: Engaged to Dame Dash
Aaliyah was engaged to music entertainer Dame Dash at the time she had passed away. She was only 22 at the time and was finishing up her third self titled album. Dame was a co-founder of Roc-A-fella. It’s not totally known if the two were engaged, but he claims he definitely had plans to marry the Princess of R&B. He worked alongside Jay-Z, the other co-founder, and she actually dated both of them before finally picking Dame to be committed to. Their partnership eventually stopped because of Aaliyah. But, Jay-Z can’t be too mad because he ended up marrying Queen Bee, aka Beyonce Knowles.
3: She had four tattoos
Aaliyah always gave off the innocent vibe, but she followed some trends and got tatted. She has the letter “A” on the side of her wrist, on her inner wrist she had an Egyptian symbol, she had a music symbol on her ankle and a dove on her lower back. The dove was a tribute to her grandmother.
4: Sang “Ave Maria” for her audition to get into the Detroit High School for Fine and Performing Arts
She sang “Ave Maria” in Latin at her audition. Of course, she was admitted into the performing arts school, but with a twist. She was already popular in the music world so it only made sense for her parents to hire a full-time bodyguard for her when she went to school. Aaliyah was also an intelligent student and she graduated high school with a 4.0 gpa.
5: “Rock The Boat” was written two years before releasing
Aaliyah’s record label pushed the release of the “Rock The Boat” music video because they felt like she wasn’t old enough to release such a sexual song. Crazy thing is, she always had one of her family members with her whenever she shot music videos. This was the first time none of her family came along. They always wonder if one of them were present during the shoot, if they could’ve stopped her tragic death from happening.
6: Married R.Kelly at 15 years old
R.Kelly didn’t waste any time to put a ring on the Princess of R&B. He was a full grown man, at 27 years old when the marriage happened. She looked up to him as mentor and role model, meanwhile he was taking full advantage of the young girl. She was only one of the multiple victims of R.Kelly at the time. As many know, his past has come back to haunt him and now he is facing punishment for all the illegal relationships he’s ever had. According to The Chicago Sun-Times, the two met when she was 12 years old, because she was the niece of R.Kelly’s manager Barry Hankerson. Once Aaliyah’s parents found out about the secret marriage, there was an annulment.
7: She covered her left eye
Aaliyah’s mother advised her to cover her left eye when she changed her hairstyle. Mainly because it added some mystery to Aaliyah’s image and personality, and also because the idea was inspired by Veronica Lake, who was her favorite actress. Many thought she was flawed in some way, like she had a lazy eye or a glass eye, but Aaliyah was as flawless as ever. Aaliyah’s always been mysterious and even her parents could never figure out how she felt about certain things. She even stated that sometimes she wouldn’t even understand herself. She was also so cool, calm and collected that no one has ever seen her lose her temper.
8: She was close friends with Missy Elliot
Her and Missy worked together producing “One In A Million” and Aaliyah trusted her and Timbaland with every suggestion they made. They told her “One In A Million” would be a hit and without any convincing, she was open-minded and followed their advice. As you know, the single turned out to be a classic hit. They were so close that they even made a bet on who would wear a dress first, because neither one of them did. Missy won the bet. When Aaliyah passed, Missy didn’t believe the news at first. She was like a little sister to her and her death hurt her to the soul.
There’s so much that we didn’t know about The Princess of R&B, and she still keeps her image of being a sweet, innocent and a talented soul, even after her death. She lost her life at the young age of 22, and will never be forgotten.
